How do you listen to a song?

So I was in the car driving home, listening to REM thinking about the end of the world as we know it because it’s the day after the election. I legit did not watch any news on the election. I put in my vote. I let it play out. I’m pretty comfortable here in Oregon. I don’t get involved or worry too much.

Anyhow, judging by the social media response, there was a lot of cheers, and also a lot of confusion the day after an election as there normally is, so I pop in R.E.M. And one of the beauties of that particular band is the piano. So when I listen to their music, I always try to picture the band playing the instruments. I imagine the movement of their hands across the instrument. They might be playing either I guitar or piano, or even something interesting like a ukulele or aggressively hitting the drums. I love to watch people playing the drums. Now I don’t know how to play the guitar or the piano or the drums or the ukelele but I always like to pretend like I have a clue. I sit there and imagine the fingers rolling across the piano deftly delivering that sweet sound across the patchwork of rectangles in black and white.

I really try to go deep and like get individual keystrokes. I try to see the music. How do you listen to music?
